Technology continues to move at an ever-increasing pace. Even for those of us that work within the IT industry it can often be a challenge to keep up with the rapid rate of change. These changes present both opportunities and threats to our companies; new ways to be more agile, productive and competitive, but also threats to our security or from competitors gaining competitive advantage over us.
The investment required to adopt specific technology has also significantly changed over the past few years. There are many examples of technology that were previously only available to mid-large sized businesses but are now within reach of most businesses. So, maybe an investment that was out of reach in the past, could now be within reach.
If we don’t regularly review our IT systems, strategy and investments, we risk the performance of our businesses falling behind. Maybe that means reduced profitability directly because of increasing costs or falling sales, or maybe indirectly because our business is less competitive or unable to adapt to changes in our own industries quickly enough.
I think it’s important also to clarify at this point that when I refer to our IT systems, I am referring to the entire eco-system that delivers technology to our business. Of course, that includes the core infrastructure, (servers, PC’s, networking etc), but, that is really just the platform on which the applications and data operate. That platform needs to be robust, available and secure, but the real ‘value’ that technology drives into your business will be determined by how your applications and data are used.
Technology should be viewed as an ‘asset’ to your company; one that provides a return on your investment in it. Just like any other investment decision we take in our business. My personal belief is that viewing IT spend as a ‘cost’ constrains a business; limiting its ability to take advantage of opportunities and protect itself from the threats it faces.
A key part of our role at CMI is to educate and inform you about how technology can help your business. This document is intended to be a catalyst for conversation. It presents our view on what an IT system should look like in an ideal world, where money and time constraints don’t exist.
Utopian I know. All I ask is that you take 30 minutes to review our blueprint and allow us to discuss it with you. We’re here to help your business take advantage of what technology has to offer.
